In 1988, the College of Engineering became the first engineering college in the densely populated Middle Euphrates region. The departments of civil, and mechanical engineering were the first to be established, followed by the departments of electrical, chemical, environmental, architecture, and biomedical engineering.

شارك الأستاذ الدكتور بهاء حمدي العميدي التدريسي في فرع الأحياء المجهرية في كلية طب الأسنان جامعة بابل في الورشة الحوارية بعنوان (الرادون وصحتنا) والتي أقامتها مؤسسة الرؤى للتعليم والتنمية المستدامة بالتعاون مع المبادرة الوطنية لدعم الطاقة وتقليل الانبعاثات والاتحاد الدولي للجامعات وشركة حضارة. فمن المعروف إن الرادون احد الغازات النبيلة وهو غاز عديم اللون والرائحة والطعم وينتج من تحلل اليورانيوم في التربة والصخور وعند وصوله إلى الهواء الخارجي يتبدد بسرعة إلى تراكيز قليله جدا لكن ممكن أن يدخل إلى المباني عبر الفتحات والشقوق والأنابيب وأماكن التصريف في الأبنية ويبدا بالتراكم ويزداد التركيز إلى مستويات قياسية عالية جدا ويعتبر من الناحية الصحية وبمرور الوقت وفي خمسينات القرن الماضي اكتشف العلماء والأطباء في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية ازدياد حالات الإصابة بسرطان الرئة الأشخاص الذين في المناجم وهم غير مدخنين. وأكدت الدراسات التي تلتها أن هناك علاقة بين وجود تراكيز عالية في الهواء للمناجم مع حالات الإصابة بسرطان الرئة لعمال المناجم لذلك فان الرادون حاليا يصنف غاز الرادون من الغازات المسببة لحالات سرطان الرئة وبداء الاهتمام بالإجراءات الضرورية لقياس مستويات غاز الرادون في البيوت وأماكن العمل وشارك في الورشة العديد من الاكاديميين والأطباء والمتخصصين في معالجة أورام السرطان. احمد إبراهيم
