In 1988, the College of Engineering became the first engineering college in the densely populated Middle Euphrates region. The departments of civil, and mechanical engineering were the first to be established, followed by the departments of electrical, chemical, environmental, architecture, and biomedical engineering.

The University of Babylon is one of the largest universities in Iraq. It is situated on the banks of the Euphrates River in the province of Babil in central Iraq. The institution is made up of 21 colleges spread across three main locations in Hilla. The central university campus is in the medical colleges complex in the center of Hilla -Al-Iskan.

أعلن تصنيف التايمز العالمي نتائج نسخته الجديدة للعام 2024 التي صنفت وقيمت ألفا وتسعمئة وأربع جامعات من مئة وثماني دول حول العالم. وحققت الجامعات العراقية في هذا التصنيف (https://www.timeshighereducation.com/.../world-ranking...) زيادة مؤشرة في عددها بالقياس الى نسخة العام الماضي حيث سجلت النتائج تحقيق ثلاث عشرة جامعة مراتب إيجابية على صعيد التنافس العالمي حيث حصدت الجامعة التكنولوجية المرتبة (801-1000) ثم جامعة النهرين بالمرتبة (1201 – 1500 ) ثم جامعة القادسية (1201 – 1500 ) وجامعة بابل (1201 – 1500 ) وجامعة ديالى (1201 – 1500 ) وبعدها جامعة الأنبار (1501+) وجامعة بغداد (1501+) وجامعة البصرة (1501+) وجامعة كربلاء (1501+) وجامعة الكوفة (1501+) والجامعة التقنية الوسطى (1501+) وجامعة الموصل (1501+) والجامعة المستنصرية (1501+). ويعتمد تصنيف التايمز العالمي معايير رئيسة لتصنيف الجامعات تستند الى ثمانية عشر مؤشرا لتقييم وقياس الأداء في خمسة مجالات: التدريس (بيئة التعلم) 29.5% والبيئة البحثية 29% وجودة البحث 30% والنظرة الدولية 7.5% ودخل الصناعة 4%. وفي هذا السياق أعلن ممثل مؤسسة التايمز في الشرق الأوسط وأفريقيا السيد نيكولاس ديفز خلال معرض ومؤتمر العراق للتعليم 2023 أن العراق لأول مرة يحتل المرتبة 37 عالميا في ضوء نتائج التايمز مما يؤشر نوعية التدريس والبحث العلمي: https://youtu.be/JVz6B1Nd4xc?feature=shared دائرة الإعلام والاتصال الحكومي وزارة التعليم العالي والبحث العلمي 27 أيلول 2023
