In 1988, the College of Engineering became the first engineering college in the densely populated Middle Euphrates region. The departments of civil, and mechanical engineering were the first to be established, followed by the departments of electrical, chemical, environmental, architecture, and biomedical engineering.

The University of Babylon is one of the largest universities in Iraq. It is situated on the banks of the Euphrates River in the province of Babil in central Iraq. The institution is made up of 21 colleges spread across three main locations in Hilla. The central university campus is in the medical colleges complex in the center of Hilla -Al-Iskan.

الزمت جامعة بابل بمطابقة التخصص التدقيق للتدريسيين بالإشراف واللجان العلمية المشكلة لمناقشات رسائل واطاريح طلبة الدراسات العليا وذلك حفاظا على الرصانة العلمية ورفع المستوى العلمي لترسيخ القيم الاكاديمية ومتابعة التطورات بما يعزز مفاصل العملية التعليمية. وقال الاستاذ الدكتور محمد منصور كاظم الخفاجي مساعد رئيس الجامعة للشؤون العلمية ،ان الجامعة اصدرت اعماما الى كلياتها كافة يلزم التدريسيين بعدم تغيير تخصصاتهم الدقيقة لمن يتم تسميتهم اعضاء في لجان المناقشات بما يتناسب مع عنوان الاطروحة او الرسالة المراد مناقشتها، وان يكون التخصص الدقيق مطابقا لكل ما تتضمنه الدراسات العليا في مجال التدريس والاشراف والمناقشات. مبينا ان يرافق ذلك اعتماد الاوامر الجامعية الصادرة بمنح الشهادة العلمية للتدريسي اطروحته في الماجستير والدكتوراه لتكون اساسا لمعرفة وتحديد (تخصصه الدقيق)، كما يتوجب ايضا تفعيل لجان الدراسات العليا فضلا عن اللجان العلمية في الاقسام والفروع كونها الحلقة المختصة في البت بالمواضيع المحالة لها وعدم التدخل في إجراءات عملها العلمي البحت. واكد مساعد رئيس الجامعة على ضرورة الالتزام بهذه التعليمات دون الاجتهاد والرأي خارج الضوابط والتعليمات والكتب الوزارية التي تنظم ذلك تحقيقا للوصول إلى المستوى والرصانة العلمية التي تتمتع بها جامعة بابل.
